Albanians protest against Jared Kushner-backed luxury resort plan

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the Albanian capital, Tirana, over the weekend to voice opposition to a planned luxury resort development backed by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Protesters argue that the project, which is set to be built along a stretch of the country's pristine coastline, would cause irreversible damage to a protected natural area.

The proposed resort, part of a larger investment deal, is slated for the Zvernec region, a zone known for its salt flats, lagoons, and rare bird species. Environmental groups and local activists say the development threatens a fragile ecosystem that is legally protected under Albanian law. "This is not just about a hotel. It is about selling off our natural heritage to the highest bidder," said one organizer at the rally.

Critics also point to a lack of transparency in the approval process, accusing the government of fast-tracking permits without proper environmental impact assessments. The Albanian government, however, has defended the project, stating it will create jobs and boost tourism in a struggling economy. Kushner's investment firm has not commented directly on the protests but has previously described the venture as a "world-class destination."

The demonstration remained peaceful, with participants carrying signs reading "Save Our Coast" and "No to Corruption." The controversy highlights growing tensions in Albania between economic development and environmental preservation, a debate that is likely to intensify as foreign investment in the region increases.
